An investigation of memory, chance, and fate. For Fourth Fridays - Downtown Guelph. The event hosts spontaneous, impermanent projects for anywhere in the downtown core. The message lanterns consisted of small stream of consciousness messages, frozen into an ice form that functioned as a lantern. As the lantern burned, the ice melted, and the messages were further revealed. By morning, all that remains are the small messages to sift around the city streets.
The thoughts are ambiguous, the lanterns ephemeral, and messages free to be found. The project toys with the ephemeral presence of concrete thought, and fleeting memory. The lanterns undergo metamorphosis from concrete form to undocumented experimental public interaction. Should someone find the message, would they stop to pick it up? Would it mean anything to them? Would they care? Once lit and placed at random, the lanterns are free to their own adventure.
